- Time Frame: Six weeks
Age Group: 8th -12th grade girls
Total Participants: 10-15
Description: This six-week workshop will introduce young women of black African descent to some aspects of
West African family kinship patterns and structure. Focus will be primarily on the Yoruba ethnic group;
however, the philosophies of other traditions will be reviewed. In addition, the workshop will help participants
understand the links to contemporary black American, Caribbean, and Brasilian (if applicable).
Topics will include, but not be limited to:
 | The importance of kinship (and a definition) | |
| The role of women and children | |
| The impact of Europeans during the slave trade and colonialism | |
| The survival of Afri(k)anisms in the “New World” (dance, art, speaking) | |
| Contemporary US, African, Caribbean, Brasilian family culture | |
| The importance of Rites of Passage |
Participants will be asked to read one or two short novels for the basis of class discussion and activities.
- When possible, women in the community will be invited to participate and share their life experiences.
Participants will keep a journal. Some journal writing will be directed, other free style. Journals may contain
poetry, feedback, reactions, or other writings related to the workshop.
Outcomes: As a result of this brief introduction, young women will have a better understanding of African
cultures and the importance of family within those cultures. They will also develop a better understanding of
how aspects of those cultures are still present in their daily lives.
Assessment: Class participation, a short paper, specific journal assignments to be shared (not every assignment
will be shared).
Standards: This workshop will address standards in Language Arts, Geography, and Social Studies.
Other: If possible, a rite of passage trip will be taken to the Selma, Alabama Slavery and Civil War Museum.
Materials Needed: Journal(s), pen, novel(s). Some materials may need to be duplicated.
