Everything Fear surges under my heart when the ferry docks. When port side slams stairs, unsettles Memory, my ide snaps off my left wrist as I stand. Everything One bead at a time, Wind whispers, Everything you know is gone. Everything you love has changed. Everything I follow small brown and green beads to the edge of straw bags full with coconuts, between splintered planks, beneath feet rushing to shore. Gone Six beads hide under blue plastic chairs. The others disappear towards the stern. I grasp what I can tightly between thumb and second finger. Tudo Another life shed in the belly of a ship. Wind pushes me gently towards the door. Water laughs. Together they are chanting, Nossa filha, vem! © 2004, M. Eliza Hamilton Abegunde |
