When I returned from Brasil in 2003, I did not know enough portuguese to ask someone's name. However, my second night home, Brasilian portuguese wove itself into my dreams. I woke speaking this language as if it had been latent since I was twelve. Andre does not speak English. Not many people do in Itaparica. We do not live on the same continent. He does not have regular access to the internet. How do we communicate? Frequent phone calls, letters, and gifts. Through dreams, visions, and conversations carried by the wind. We communicate within a sacred network woven from our commitment to the ancestors and orisas. We are strengthened by the agreement we made before manifesting as human beings: to learn as much as we could about the world, through the centuries, and to return to each other to share knowledge, love, and joy at all levels. So many lifetimes later, we honor this commitment without feeling chained to or constricted by it. Our connection is so strong that one day I found a small flower from the island in my hair; another day, the pain from Andre's injured hand physically occurred in mine. Occasionally, we will collaborate on a healing. It has been this way from the beginning when we simultaneously recognized each other and the places we had been together. This is the kind of connection that every person wants at least once in his or her life, right? How do you get it and how does it work? What is needed to maintain it? Is it possible to live in the sacred moment on the path all the time? What's easier for you to do: say it or send it in a dream?
